Art responding
This is an opportunity for children to explore the wonders of collage.
Artist such as Eric Carle use collage for his picture story books. His most well known book is' The Very Hungry Caterpillar'.
There are several other artists who use collages in children's books, such as Leo Lionno and Ezra Jack Keats, who's collage is above.
To explore and expand the children's knowledge on collage, early childhood educators must take advantage of these resources.
A great art responding opportunity is for a teacher to read books that contain collage as its main form of illustration.
Books include:
'It's mine!' by Leo Lionni
'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle
'The Snowy Day' by Ezra Jack Keats.
Through reading these books to children, and pointing out the collage techniques, the children will be able to enhance their own learning.
Learning outcomes that will be met include:
-Outcome 1: children have a strong sense of identity
-Outcome 2: children are connected and contribute to their world
Outcome 5: children are effective communicators
Reading one or more of these books would be a great lead up to the learning opportunity for 3-5 year old's, as shown on the tab above.
